Lucid Dreaming & How You Can Perfect It
Dreams are a complicated subject for most people. After all, it seems as though there are people who remember all of their dreams, while others remember none at all. It is not uncommon that most people have at least heard about lucid dreaming. However, when you ask them for more information on the subject, they may not have the first clue where to start. In order to help you better understand what it is that we are talking about, we are going to start from the very beginning. Continue reading below to learn everything you could ever want to know about lucid dreaming.
What is Lucid Dreaming?
In the simplest terms, lucid dreaming is the ability to observe and/or control your dream consciously while you are having them. This means that your dream world is essentially an alternate reality, in which you can do whatever you like without consequences. When you accomplish lucidity, you realize that you are dreaming, making your brain switch to waking mode where you can see, hear, feel, taste and even smell everything around you. The best part about lucid dreaming is that if you get in too deep, you can easily wake yourself up.
Who can learn to lucid dream?
Literally anyone can learn to lucid dream. However, it may be more difficult from some than it is for others. After all, we all have dreams, so why wouldn’t we all be able to control what happens in them with a little practice? It is thought that children are capable of lucid dreaming just by using their intuition. Overall though, there does not seem to be a direct correlation between age and one’s cognitive ability to have lucid dreams.
In fact, many people experience the majority of their lucid dreams by accident. If you are interested in making it a habit on the other hand, you simply have to become familiar with recognizing the dreamstate.
How to recognize the dreamstate
There are several different ways in which a person can recognize that they have entered the dreamstate. You can discover them below:
- Try Meditating: Trying to focus your mind on demand
- Try Visualizing: Enter into the lucid dream state from waking
- Try Reality Checks: Attempt to do spontaneous self awareness checks when you are dreaming
- Writing it down in a dream journal: Being able to know what you dream about as opposed to what happens in reality will help you to know when you are in a dream.
By practicing one or more of these techniques, you can begin to become more aware of when you are dreaming, which is the first key to successfully lucid dreaming.
What is lucid dreaming good for?
You may be wondering what exactly the point is. After all, sure it may be fun to be able to control what happens in your dreams but other than that, why would anyone want to do it? You’ll be happy to know that lucid dreaming actually has several personal growth applications such as:
