The Berkey Primer attaches to the stem of a Black Berkey filter and connects to a standard faucet. Tap-water pressure flushes through the filter element to prime it (push trapped air out and saturate the media), which lets a new filter begin purifying right away. The same tool can also be used to purge and clean filters that have been in use.

Why do I need to prime my Berkey filters?

New Black Berkey® elements may filter slowly until air pockets are cleared. Priming pushes water through the media so they perform at full flow.

Can I use it to clean my filters?

Yes. The Primer can also purge filters that have slowed down over time.

Is it required?

Not strictly — you can prime using a faucet adapter — but the Primer is faster and works in any sink configuration.
